About the album
spring is about memory, family, and forgiveness, featuring a bevy of smart, nip-tuck sextet arrangements. But it is what he places in between his vocal tracks that makes spring such an unforgettable listen. For 22 years, Cortez has held onto cassette tapes of his estranged family: among them, audio taken at his parents’ wedding. On spring, he embraces this audio. Interspersed with Cortez singing “i get along without you very well,” “the song is you,” “you must believe in spring,” and other standards on the theme of spring, we catch snippets of his parents’ wedding vows, recorded in January 1982.
