Nightbird
On his sophomore effort through La Reserve, Nightbird, Birdland Artist Richard Cortez is joined by pianist and collaborator Tyler Henderson.
The two weave a wide array of material spanning from well known jazz ballad Body and Soul (1930) to lesser known repertoire such as Bird Alone (1991) by Abbey Lincoln.
Tyler and Richard have toured California and the Midwest, playing venues such as The Catalina Club, The Black Cat, Caffè Vivace, and Crooners with their show that includes a selection of more than 300 songs with setlists that vary every night.
Nightbird was recorded in Brooklyn at Big Orange Sheep in just five hours.
The first single will be out in March, and the album will be released in the summer of 2025.

With his debut jazz album Mood Swings(la reserve) hitting 1 million streams just three months after its release and Amazon Music listing his recording of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” as one of the top jazz recordings of 2024, Richard Cortez has quickly become a leader in the new crop of vocal talents emerging from the contemporary straight ahead Jazz scene.
Known for his ambition and extensive knowledge of The Great American Songbook, Richard Cortez has shared the bandstand with some of the world’s most celebrated and respected jazz musicians — Sullivan Fortner, Orange Julius, Kyle Poole, Yasushi Nakamura, Paul Sikivie, Adam Birnbaum, Paul Gill, Peter Bernstein, Grant Stewart, Alexander Claffy, Joe Farnsworth, Jerry Weldon, Joe Strasser, Nicole Glover, Russell Hall and Emmet Cohen — to name a few.
Recently, Richard released a holiday album, A Cavlan and Cortez Christmas, with viral TikTok vocalist and label mate June Cavlan who’s millions of views on the popular platform generated quite a buzz around the pairs duo project this holiday season.
Richard just wrapped a national tour promoting Mood Swings that included venues like Cafe Vivace, The Black Cat and Catalina Club where he headlined his own show as well as opened for 96 year old jazz legend Marilyn Maye. Richard splits his time between a number of monthly residencies at iconic venues across the city-among them Mezzrow, sister venue of Smalls, Cortez has focused and refined his artistry while growing his wide fan-base. Recent performances in distinguished productions such as Live at Emmet’s Place with the Emmet Cohen Trio, or Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz at Pride with Tony/Grammy Award winner Bryan Carter, have marked the vocalist’s career for success.
Richard Cortez’s renderings of timeless treasures by Cole Porter, Billie Holiday, Jerome Kern, and so many others deliver sweetness, self-assuredness and disarming vulnerability with a well-timed wit. Tyler Henderson
Piano
Tyler Henderson began playing piano at age 5. He was inspired to play piano seriously upon hearing the work of famous pianists Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi. Tyler then moved with his family to Houston, Texas, upon his acceptance into the prestigious High School For Performing and Visual Arts.
In Houston, Tyler had the pleasure of playing with Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Sean Jones, Don Braden, and was encouraged by masters such as Barry Harris, Javon Jackson, and Robert Glasper through his participation in incredible programs such as YoungArts and the Thelonious Monk Institute All-Star Tour.
He arrived in New York in 2019 to attend Juilliard, and was mentored by Ted Rosenthal and Geoffrey Keezer. While he was in school, he began working as a sideman with legendary musicians such as Joe Magnarelli, Bruce Harris, Rodney Green, and Grant Stewart.
He received his masters degree and currently collaborates with musicians at New York venues such as Smalls, Dizzy’s, the Django, and more.
He is recording his first album for the Cellar Live record label in the fall of 2024.
